How to factory reset an iPhone?
A factory reset erases your iPhone and returns it to a clean starting state. Before doing it, make sure your important data is backed up, your Apple account details are available, and you no longer need anything stored only on the device.
Steps
- Back up your iPhone to iCloud or a computer.
- Make sure you know your Apple account login details.
- Open the erase or reset menu in Settings and choose to erase all content and settings.
- Wait for the iPhone to restart to the setup screen.
Before erasing
- Check photos, notes, and app files one last time.
- Prepare SIM or eSIM details if you will set the device up again.
- Remove accessories and personal items if you are selling the phone.
Pro Tip
- If you are selling or giving away the phone, separate the cable, case, and accessories before the handoff, because small items are often forgotten once the reset is complete and the phone is packed away.
- Resetting is safest after the backup is verified, not just started.
- If you plan to keep the phone, allow enough time for setup after the reset.
