How to Transfer Android Photos to a PC with ADB

ADB can transfer Android photos to a PC through the Android Debug Bridge command line. Enable USB debugging, connect the phone with a data-capable USB cable, authorize the computer, confirm the ADB connection, and run an adb pull command for the camera folder or another photo directory.

Steps
  1. Install the Android Platform Tools package on the PC, then open Command Prompt or Terminal in the Platform Tools folder.
  2. Enable Developer options on the Android phone by tapping Build number several times under Settings > About phone. Open Developer options and enable USB debugging.
  3. Connect the phone with a USB data cable. Select File transfer from the USB notification and accept the Allow USB debugging prompt.
  4. Confirm the connection with:
    adb devices
A device serial number should appear with the status device.
  5. Create a PC destination folder and pull photos from the camera directory:
    adb pull /sdcard/DCIM/Camera "C:\Users\Public\Pictures\Android Photos"
Replace the destination path when needed. Other photo folders may include /sdcard/Pictures, /sdcard/Download, or an app-specific media folder.
Common Issues and Fixes
  • adb is not recognized: Platform Tools are missing or the terminal is open in a different folder. Install Platform Tools and run the command from the correct directory.
  • unauthorized appears in ADB: The USB debugging authorization prompt was not accepted. Unlock the phone, accept the prompt, and run adb devices again.
  • The phone does not appear: A faulty cable, USB hub, or missing driver may block detection. Use a different data cable, connect directly to the PC, and install the phone manufacturer's USB driver when required.
  • adb pull reports a missing file: The photo folder path is incorrect. Check available storage folders with adb shell ls /sdcard/ and inspect folders such as DCIM or Pictures.
  • Transfer photos phone to PC not working after connection: The USB mode may be charging only. Select File transfer, restart ADB with adb kill-server followed by adb start-server, and reconnect the phone.
Quick Tips
  • Keep the phone unlocked during the transfer, especially when the screen lock activates quickly.
  • ADB pull photos from Android may copy original files without converting HEIC, RAW, or motion-photo formats.
  • Large folders can take considerable time. Pull one subfolder at a time when a transfer repeatedly stops.
  • Cloud-only photos may not exist in local storage and cannot be copied through ADB until downloaded to the phone.
Related Questions
Can ADB transfer photos without USB debugging?

No. ADB requires USB debugging or an authorized wireless-debugging connection. Standard USB file transfer can work without ADB when the computer supports MTP.

Why is USB phone transfer not working on Windows?

Common causes include a charge-only cable, an incorrect USB mode, missing drivers, or a locked phone. Cable replacement, File transfer mode, driver installation, and phone unlocking usually resolve the problem.
