How to Remove an iPhone App That Has No Delete Option

An iPhone app with no Delete App option usually has a restriction enabled, appears only on the Home Screen, or is a built-in Apple app that cannot be removed. Check Screen Time permissions first, then delete the app from the App Library or iPhone Storage settings. A managed iPhone may require administrator approval.

Steps
  1. Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases. Set Deleting Apps to Allow.
  2. Return to the Home Screen, touch and hold the app icon, select Remove App, then choose Delete App. Remove from Home Screen only hides the app.
  3. Swipe left past all Home Screen pages to open the App Library. Touch and hold the app icon, select Delete App, and confirm removal.
  4. Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage, select the app, tap Delete App, and confirm. The storage screen can remove apps when the Home Screen menu is unavailable.
Common Issues and Fixes
  • Delete App option missing: Screen Time may block app removal. Set Deleting Apps to Allow, then restart the deletion process.
  • Only Remove from Home Screen appears: The app may be located in the App Library. Open the App Library and delete the app from the icon menu.
  • App remains after deletion: The app may be built into iOS or required by the system. Apple allows removal of some built-in apps but prevents removal of essential system apps.
  • Deletion controls are locked: A school or workplace profile may manage the iPhone. Check Settings > General > VPN & Device Management and contact the device administrator.
  • App icon is missing: The app may already be removed or hidden. Search the App Library, then check Settings > General > iPhone Storage for the installed app list.
💡Protip:

Deleting an app usually removes the app installation but does not automatically cancel subscriptions. Cancel subscriptions through the Apple Account subscription settings.

Quick Tips
  • Offloading an app frees storage while keeping documents and data. Select Offload App only when complete removal is unnecessary.
  • Some built-in Apple apps can be deleted, while Phone, Messages, Settings, and other essential apps cannot be removed.
  • A child account may inherit Screen Time restrictions from Family Sharing. The family organizer may need to change the deletion permission.
Related Questions
Why can an iPhone app not be deleted?

The most common causes are a Screen Time restriction, a managed device profile, or an Apple system app that does not support deletion. The App Library and iPhone Storage settings can confirm whether the app remains installed.

Does removing an app delete app data?

Deleting an app removes the local installation and may remove locally stored data. Data synced with iCloud or an app account may remain available after reinstalling the app.
