How to Choose Automatic or Keep Originals When Transferring iPhone Photos to PC

🤔Note:

Choose Automatic when a Mac or PC needs broadly compatible JPEG or H.264 files during USB import. Choose Keep Originals when preserving HEIF/HEIC, HEVC, Live Photo components, or original quality matters. The iPhone USB photo transfer format setting controls conversion during import and does not change files already stored on the iPhone.

Steps
  1. Open Settings > Apps > Photos on newer iOS versions. On older iOS versions, open Settings > Photos.
  2. Scroll to Transfer to Mac or PC and select Automatic or Keep Originals.
  3. Connect the iPhone with a USB cable, unlock the device, and approve Trust if prompted.
  4. Import photos through the Windows Photos app, File Explorer, Mac Photos, or Image Capture.
  5. Check imported file extensions before deleting any iPhone copies or creating a backup.
Automatic vs. Keep Originals
Option Best For Limitation
Automatic Windows compatibility and easy sharing HEIC or HEVC files may convert to JPEG or H.264
Keep Originals Original quality, metadata, HEIF/HEVC, and Live Photos Some computers may require additional codecs
Common Issues and Fixes
  • HEIC files will not open: The computer may lack HEIF support. Select Automatic for a new import, or install compatible HEIF/HEVC extensions.
  • Photos arrive as JPEG instead of HEIC: Automatic conversion is active. Select Keep Originals before importing again.
  • Live Photos appear incomplete: A Live Photo contains an image and a short video component. Keep Originals and import both related files.
  • The selected option seems ineffective: The setting affects later USB transfers, not files already imported. Change the option and import the files again.
  • The iPhone does not appear on the computer: A locked iPhone, unapproved trust request, faulty cable, or outdated driver can block detection. Unlock the iPhone, approve trust, and test another cable or USB port.
Quick Tips
💡Protip:

Keep Originals preserves the source format but may require HEIF/HEVC support on Windows or older Mac systems.
Automatic can create larger JPEG files and may remove some format-specific advantages of HEIF or HEVC.
iCloud Photos settings and USB transfer settings are separate. Optimized iPhone Storage may require an internet connection before full-resolution originals can be imported.
Avoid deleting iPhone photos until the imported files open correctly and a backup exists.

Related Questions
Is Automatic or Keep Originals better for Windows?

Automatic is usually easier for Windows because converted JPEG and H.264 files have wider compatibility. Keep Originals is preferable when original formats and metadata matter more than immediate compatibility.

Does Keep Originals preserve iPhone photo quality?

Yes. Keep Originals transfers the stored HEIF, HEVC, and Live Photo components without automatic format conversion. Quality still depends on the original iPhone capture and available storage.
