How to Convert Existing HEIC Photos to JPEG on iPhone

Existing HEIC photos can be converted to JPEG on iPhone through the Files app. Export selected photos from the Photos app, use the Files app’s Quick Actions > Convert Image feature, and choose JPEG. The conversion creates JPEG copies while preserving the original HEIC files unless the originals are deleted manually.

Steps
  1. Open Photos, tap Select, and choose the HEIC images requiring conversion.
  2. Tap Share, select Save to Files, choose a folder, and tap Save.
  3. Open Files, locate the saved HEIC images, and tap the three-dot menu.
  4. Choose Select, mark one or more images, tap the three-dot menu again, and select Quick Actions > Convert Image.
  5. Select JPEG, choose an image size, and confirm. JPEG copies appear in the same folder.

The Files app provides a practical way to convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone without installing another image converter. The original HEIC photos remain available in Photos and Files.

🤔Note:

Converting existing HEIC photos to JPEG creates copies and does not automatically delete the original HEIC files.

Common Issues and Fixes
  • Convert Image is missing: The selected file may not be recognized as an image, or the iPhone may use an older iOS version. Save the photo to Files again and update iOS if necessary.
  • Only one image converts: The Photos export may have created an unsupported selection. Select images directly inside Files and run Quick Actions > Convert Image again.
  • JPEG files look smaller: JPEG uses different compression and may reduce image quality or remove some editing data. Choose the largest available size for better detail.
  • Converted photos are hard to locate: Files saves converted images beside the original files. Check the selected iCloud Drive or On My iPhone folder.
  • Future photos still use HEIC: Open Settings > Camera > Formats, select Most Compatible, and capture new photos as JPEG. The setting does not change existing HEIC images.
Quick Tips
  • Use the Large image-size option when printing, archiving, or uploading images for professional use.
  • Keep original HEIC files until JPEG compatibility has been confirmed in the target app or website.
  • Converting existing HEIC photos to JPEG does not automatically place JPEG copies back into the Photos library. Use Share > Save Image from Files when a Photos library copy is required.
  • Email or messaging apps may convert HEIC files automatically, but automatic conversion can reduce control over resolution and file quality.
💡Protip:

Choose the Large image-size option when you need better detail for printing, archiving, or professional uploads.

Related Questions
Does changing iPhone camera format convert existing HEIC photos?

No. Most Compatible affects newly captured images only. Existing HEIC photos require manual conversion through Files, Shortcuts, or a compatible computer application.

Can multiple HEIC photos be converted to JPEG together?

Yes. Save multiple photos to Files, select the image files, and use Quick Actions > Convert Image. Batch conversion works best when all selected files are stored in the same folder.
