How to Create a Poll in iPhone Messages

An iPhone can create a poll in Messages through the Polls iMessage app or another compatible polling app. Open an iMessage group chat, add the polling app from the Messages app drawer, enter the question and answer choices, then send the poll for group members to vote.

🤔Note:

Interactive polls generally require an iMessage group chat. SMS or MMS conversations may not support poll features.

Steps
  1. Open the Messages app and select an iMessage group conversation. Blue message bubbles indicate an iMessage chat.
  2. Tap the Plus (+) button beside the text field, then select More or Store to view available iMessage apps.
  3. Search for Polls or install a compatible poll app from the iMessage App Store.
  4. Open the polling app inside the group chat, enter the question, add answer choices, and adjust any available voting settings.
  5. Tap Send. Group members can select an option, and poll results appear in the conversation when supported by the selected app.
Common Issues and Fixes
  • No Polls option appears: The Polls app may not be installed or available in the current iOS version or region. Check the Messages app drawer and install a compatible polling app.
  • Poll cannot be sent: The conversation may use SMS or MMS instead of iMessage. Start an iMessage group chat with Apple devices and enabled iMessage accounts.
  • Participants cannot vote: An outdated iOS version or unsupported device may limit interactive poll features. Update iOS or share a web-based poll as an alternative.
  • Poll results do not update: The polling app may require a refresh, app update, or stable internet connection. Reopen the poll and check for updates.
  • A group member is missing: The participant may have joined through SMS, switched devices, or left the group. Create a new iMessage group when consistent voting access is required.
💡Protip:

Confirm every participant uses an iPhone, iPad, or Mac with a compatible iMessage version before creating an iMessage group poll.

Keep answer choices short because long options can be difficult to read inside the Messages interface.

Check whether the selected poll app allows multiple votes, anonymous voting, or adding new choices.

Screenshots show poll results but do not preserve live voting. A sent poll remains interactive only while the supporting app and message thread remain available.

Related Questions
Can an iPhone create a poll without an app?

A standard Messages composer may not include a native poll button. A Polls iMessage app or compatible third-party app is generally required to vote in Messages on iPhone.

Can SMS group chats use iPhone message polls?

Most interactive polls require iMessage and may not work in green-bubble SMS or MMS chats. A browser-based polling service can provide an alternative for mixed-device groups.
