How to Free Up iPhone Storage Used by iCloud Drive Without Deleting Cloud Files

iCloud Drive files can be removed from iPhone storage without deleting cloud copies by selecting Remove Download in the Files app. The command deletes the local device copy while keeping the file available in iCloud Drive for later download. Avoid selecting Delete, which removes the file from iCloud Drive and synced devices.

🤔Note:

Remove Download deletes only the local iPhone copy. Do not select Delete unless you also want to remove the file from iCloud Drive and synced devices.

Steps
  1. Open the Files app and tap Browse.
  2. Select iCloud Drive, then locate large files or folders marked as downloaded.
  3. Touch and hold a file or folder, then select Remove Download.
  4. Repeat the process for other offline files using significant iPhone storage.
  5. Check Settings > General > iPhone Storage after several minutes to confirm updated storage usage.
Common Issues and Fixes
  • “Delete” appears instead of “Remove Download”: The selected item may not be stored locally, or the Files app may need an update. Open the item location under iCloud Drive and check again.
  • iCloud Drive is empty but using storage: Local cache data, pending synchronization, or recently removed files may still occupy space. Restart the iPhone, connect to Wi-Fi, and recheck iPhone Storage after synchronization finishes.
  • Storage usage does not decrease immediately: iOS may require time to recalculate storage categories. Restart the device and allow several minutes before checking again.
  • Files download again automatically: An app may be opening or syncing the file. Disable automatic downloads within the related app, when available, and remove the local copy again.
  • A deleted file remains available: Deleted iCloud Drive files may remain in Recently Deleted for up to 30 days. Permanently deleting the file also removes the cloud copy and should only occur when cloud retention is unnecessary.
Quick Tips
💡Protip:

Large videos, PDFs, ZIP archives, and project folders usually provide the quickest storage reduction. Removing a local download reduces iPhone storage, but it does not reduce your iCloud storage plan usage.

  • Remove Download affects iPhone storage only. The original iCloud Drive file remains available on other synced devices.
  • iPhone Storage and iCloud Storage are separate categories. Removing a local download reduces device storage, not the iCloud storage plan usage.
  • Offline files may require another download after removal when no internet connection is available.
Related Questions
Does removing an iCloud Drive download delete the cloud file?

No. Remove Download deletes only the local iPhone copy. The cloud file remains in iCloud Drive and can be downloaded again.

Why is iCloud Drive taking up iPhone storage?

Downloaded files, cached previews, synchronization data, and offline app documents can use device storage. Removing local downloads reduces iPhone storage while preserving cloud files.
