How to Reduce iCloud Backup Size Without Deleting Phone Data

Reduce iCloud backup size without deleting phone data by excluding unnecessary apps, removing old device backups, and managing large files stored separately in iCloud. Open iPhone backup settings to choose which apps are included in the iPhone backup. Disabling an app removes its backup copy from iCloud, not the app or existing phone data.

🤔Note:

Turning off backup for an app removes its backup data from iCloud, but the installed app and its existing data remain on the iPhone unless you manually delete them.

Steps
  1. Open Settings > [Apple Account] > iCloud > Storage > Backups, then select the current iPhone backup.
  2. Review the app list under Choose Data to Back Up. Turn off backup for apps with replaceable data, large media files, or data already synced through another service.
  3. Confirm the warning to remove the selected app data from the next iCloud backup. Existing app data remains on the iPhone unless the app or phone is manually deleted.
  4. Check iCloud Storage for large Photos, Messages, Mail attachments, and files. Remove unnecessary cloud content separately because app backup settings do not reduce every category of iCloud storage.
  5. Delete an old iPhone backup from Settings > [Apple Account] > iCloud > Storage > Backups. Select an inactive device, then choose Delete Backup and confirm.
Common Issues and Fixes
  • iPhone next backup size too large: Large photo libraries, message attachments, or app databases may be included. Review the backup app list and remove unnecessary categories.
  • Backup size does not decrease immediately: The displayed estimate may update after storage recalculation. Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi and power, then check the backup settings again.
  • App data disappears after disabling backup: The app’s iCloud backup copy was removed. Enable backup again if the data cannot be restored through app sync or another backup.
  • Old backup cannot be found: The inactive device may use a different Apple Account. Check every device listed under iCloud Backups.
  • iCloud storage remains full after deleting a backup: Photos, Messages, iCloud Drive files, or Mail attachments may use most storage. Review each category in iCloud Storage.
💡Protip:

Keep backup enabled for contacts, health data, messages, and documents that lack another recovery method. Apps that synchronize data through their own accounts may not need full iCloud backup inclusion.

Quick Tips
  • Keep backup enabled for contacts, health data, messages, and documents that lack another recovery method.
  • Apps that synchronize data through their own accounts may not need full iCloud backup inclusion.
  • iCloud Photos uses separate storage and does not become smaller by excluding the Photos app from device backup.
  • A smaller backup does not increase the free iCloud allowance; the free limit remains determined by the Apple Account plan.

Does removing an app from iCloud backup delete the app from an iPhone?

No. Disabling backup removes the app’s backup data from iCloud while leaving the installed app and current phone data unchanged.

Can an old iPhone backup be deleted from iCloud?

Yes. Select the inactive device under iCloud Storage > Backups, then choose Delete Backup. Confirm that the backup is no longer required for restoring that device.
