How to Rename an iPhone After Setting It Up

An iPhone can be renamed after setup from Settings without resetting the device. Open Settings > General > About > Name, enter the preferred label, and tap Done. The new name updates the iPhone’s Bluetooth identity, AirDrop listing, Personal Hotspot name, and device label used by Finder, iCloud, and connected accessories.

Steps
  1. Open the Settings app on the iPhone.
  2. Tap General, then select About.
  3. Tap Name at the top of the About page.
  4. Delete the existing label and enter the preferred iPhone name.
  5. Tap Done to save the change.

The same process can rename a new iPhone after setup. No erase, restart, Apple Account change, or system reset is required.

Common Issues and Fixes
  • The Name option is difficult to find: The setting is located under Settings > General > About, not under Apple Account settings. Open the About page and select Name.
  • The new name does not appear immediately: Bluetooth, AirDrop, Finder, or iCloud may still display cached information. Turn the related service off and on, or restart the iPhone.
  • AirDrop still shows an unexpected label: AirDrop may display a contact name or profile photo instead of the device name. Check Settings > General > AirDrop and the Contacts app.
  • The iPhone name keeps reverting: A management profile, school account, work account, or supervision policy may control the device label. Check Settings > General > VPN & Device Management.
  • Special characters cause display problems: Some accessories and older systems may handle emojis or unusual symbols poorly. Use a short name with standard letters and numbers.
💡Protip:

Choose a unique label when several iPhones use the same Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or Apple Account. A device name change does not change the Apple Account name, phone number, Apple ID email, or contact card.

  • Connected cars, headphones, and computers may require disconnection and reconnection before displaying the changed iPhone device name.
  • A renamed iPhone may still appear under an older backup label until a new backup is created.
Related Questions
Does renaming an iPhone erase data?

No. Renaming an iPhone changes only the device label and does not remove photos, apps, messages, settings, or accounts.

Can an iPhone name be changed from a computer?

Finder or iTunes may allow device naming in some setups, but the iPhone’s Settings > General > About > Name menu is the most consistent method.
