How to Reuse a Deceased Family Member's iPhone Through Apple's Official Process

An inherited iPhone can be reused only after the deceased owner’s data is handled lawfully and Activation Lock is removed through Apple’s official support process. A Legacy Contact may provide account access, but Legacy Contact access alone does not unlock the iPhone. Proof of death, legal authority, and proof of purchase may be required.

Steps
  1. Confirm legal authority. Identify the Apple Legacy Contact, estate executor, or legally authorized family representative. Gather the death certificate, estate documents, and proof of purchase when available.
  2. Protect needed data before erasing. Use Legacy Contact access or the authorized Apple Account process to preserve eligible account data. An iPhone passcode may still be required for encrypted device data.
  3. Erase the iPhone correctly. If the passcode is available, back up needed data, sign out of iCloud and Find My, then select Erase All Content and Settings. If the passcode is unavailable, recovery mode can erase the iPhone, but recovery mode does not remove Activation Lock.
  4. Request Activation Lock removal. Contact Apple Support and provide the death certificate, legal authorization, device serial number or IMEI, and proof of purchase. Apple reviews each deceased owner iPhone activation lock request individually.
  5. Set up the device after approval. After Apple removes the account association, restart setup with a new Apple Account. Activation Lock removal does not restore erased data.
Common Issues and Fixes
  • The iPhone requests the deceased owner’s Apple Account: Activation Lock remains active. Contact Apple Support with legal documents and ownership evidence.
  • Recovery mode erased the phone, but setup still requires an account: Erasing removes local data but does not remove the Find My association. An authorized account process or Apple review is required.
  • A death certificate alone is rejected: Apple may also require executor documentation, court authority, or proof of purchase matching the device.
  • Important photos or messages are missing after erasure: Encrypted device data may be unrecoverable without the passcode or an eligible backup.
Quick Tips
  • Do not erase the iPhone before checking for backups when family data must be preserved.
  • A carrier lock is separate from Activation Lock. The mobile carrier must handle carrier restrictions.
  • A company-managed iPhone may have Mobile Device Management restrictions requiring the organization’s administrator.
  • Legacy Contact access can provide account data, but access does not automatically transfer device ownership.
Related Questions
Can a deceased person’s iPhone be unlocked without the passcode?

A passcode cannot be bypassed through Apple’s official process. Recovery mode can erase the device, while Activation Lock still requires account authorization or Apple’s review.

Does Legacy Contact remove Activation Lock?

Legacy Contact access does not automatically remove Activation Lock. Device reuse still requires removal of the deceased owner’s Apple Account association.

💡Protip:

After Activation Lock removal, MobileTrans can help transfer available data from the inherited iPhone to another supported device.
