How to Share an iCloud Drive Folder from iPhone
To share an iCloud Drive folder on iPhone, open the Files app, press and hold the folder, select Share, choose Collaborate, set access and permission options, then send an invitation through Messages, Mail, or a copied link.
🤔Note:
Shared folders require iCloud Drive and an active Apple Account.
Steps
- Open Files, tap Browse, and select iCloud Drive.
- Press and hold the folder intended for sharing, then tap Share.
- Select Collaborate instead of Send Copy. Choose Only Invited People or Anyone with the Link.
- Set permission to Can Make Changes or View Only. Select whether recipients can invite additional people.
- Choose Messages, Mail, or Copy Link to send the folder invitation.
Common Issues and Fixes
- The Collaborate option is missing: The selected item may be stored under On My iPhone or another cloud service. Move the folder into iCloud Drive, then open the sharing menu again.
- Recipients cannot open the folder: Access may be limited to invited Apple Accounts, or the invitation may have expired. Confirm the recipient address and resend the invitation.
- Folder contents cannot be edited: The permission setting may be View Only. Open the sharing controls and change access to Can Make Changes.
- The shared folder does not sync: An unstable connection, disabled iCloud Drive, or low iCloud storage may prevent synchronization. Check Settings > [Apple Account] > iCloud > Drive and confirm sufficient storage.
- The link opens without access: The link may have been revoked or restricted to invited people. Review the folder’s sharing settings and create a new invitation link.
💡Protip:
Send Copy shares a file copy and does not create a collaborative folder. Select Collaborate for ongoing access and synchronization.
Quick Tips
- To invite people to a shared folder on iPhone Files, use Manage Shared Folder from the folder’s sharing menu, then select Add People.
- To stop sharing an iCloud folder on iPhone, open Manage Shared Folder, select Stop Sharing, and confirm. Existing participants lose access immediately.
- Renaming or moving a shared folder can affect organization for every participant. Keep the folder in iCloud Drive and avoid deleting it while collaboration is active.
Can a shared iCloud Drive folder be shared with Android users?
Yes. Select Anyone with the Link and send the invitation through a supported messaging or email app. Editing access may depend on browser support and Apple Account requirements.
Does deleting a shared folder remove access for everyone?
Deleting the folder can remove access and may move folder contents to Recently Deleted. Stop sharing first when access removal is the primary goal.
