How to Stop App Updates Asking for an Old Apple Account

Apps asking for an old Apple Account usually remain linked to the account used for the original download. Stop repeated prompts by updating the app with the original account, or delete and reinstall the app while signed in to the current Apple Account. App ownership cannot be transferred between Apple Accounts.

🤔Note:

App ownership and update permissions remain linked to the Apple Account that originally downloaded the app. If that account cannot be recovered, deleting and reinstalling the app is the standard workaround.

Steps
  1. Open Settings > [name] > Media & Purchases and check the Apple Account currently used for App Store downloads.
  2. If the old account remains accessible, sign in with the old account when the update prompt appears, then complete the app update.
  3. If the old account is unavailable, back up important app data before removing the affected app.
  4. Delete the affected app, open the App Store, and reinstall the app while signed in with the current Apple Account.
  5. Check Settings > [name] > Media & Purchases again if the old prompt continues after reinstallation.
Common Issues and Fixes
  • Apps asking for an old Apple ID after transfer: The apps were downloaded under the previous account. Delete and reinstall each affected app using the current Apple Account.
  • An iPhone app update requires a different Apple Account: The app update is linked to the account that originally obtained the app. Enter the original account password or reinstall the app.
  • The old Apple Account email no longer exists: The account may still be active under a changed email address. Use the current sign-in email and password for the original account.
  • App restore requests an old Apple ID password: Restored app records can retain the original purchase account. Reinstall the app from the App Store after confirming that saved app data is backed up.
  • The old prompt appears for only one app: A single app may have been installed under a separate account. Remove and reinstall the specific app instead of resetting the iPhone.
💡Protip:

Confirm the Apple Account under Media & Purchases, not only the iCloud account shown at the top of Settings. Deleting an app can remove locally stored data, so check the app’s backup or cloud-sync status first.

Quick Tips
  • Confirm the Apple Account under Media & Purchases, not only the iCloud account shown at the top of Settings.
  • Deleting an app can remove locally stored data. Check the app’s backup or cloud-sync status first.
  • Paid apps may require repurchase when the original account cannot be recovered.
  • Family Sharing can provide access to some purchases, but Family Sharing does not transfer app ownership.
  • Restart the iPhone and install the latest iOS update if the old prompt remains after app reinstallation.
Related Questions
Can an app be transferred to another Apple Account?

No. Apple associates app ownership and update permissions with the original Apple Account. Reinstallation under a new account is the standard workaround.

Can the old Apple Account password be avoided?

Only when the app is removed and installed again under the current account, or when the original account is recovered. Existing app ownership cannot be changed through iPhone settings.
