With your important data and contacts transferred over, it’s time to think about apps, which are a big deal for smartphone users today, They help us communicate and keep track of our lives on a daily basis, and having to lose favourite apps or get to know new ones can be a major concern if you’re changing phone brands. But the good new is that some of BlackBerry’s top apps are now available in Android versions, which should make the switch less traumatic.

BlackBerry Messenger

One of the best apps BlackBerry has on offer is BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), which for anyone who has used BlackBerry is a real plus and a big loss when you switch brands. But thankfully, there is now an Android BBM version, so you can continue connecting with people in the same way on your Android with instant messages, voice calls, voice notes and more.

Apps for Android and BlackBerry

Downloading the BBM app to your Android is nice and simple too. Simply head to an app store for Android phones like Google Play, search for BBM and install. You’ll be back to chatting on BBM in no time.

Alternative BBM apps on Android

That being said, Android does offer a much wider choice of instant message apps than BlackBerry. If you’re feeling brave and fancy trying something new, apps like Whatsapp Messenger, as well as Facebook Messenger, LINE, WeChat, and Skype are all fantastic apps for keeping in touch.

Android Apps for BlackBerry z10/Q10

More good news, it works the other way round too, with a number of Android apps now being made available to use with BlackBerry Z10/Q10 devices. However, you’ll need to venture beyond the BlackBerry app centre and head to a third party provider like Amazon Appstore, Snap APK Downloader and 1mobile Market to install them.

This isn’t a difficult task though, simply install the app store onto your Z10/Q10, then you can browse an extensive selection of Android apps and quickly install them on your phone, just like you would from the BlackBerry store.

Android apps for BlackBerry Playbooks

Similarly if you have a BlackBerry Playbook, there are also a variety of Android Player apps that can now be utilised on these devices too.

Part 4: Android Vs. BlackBerry

If you’re still not sure if making the switch from BlackBerry to Android is or has been the right choice, then here’s a few comparisons that might help convince you either way.

Hardware

When it comes to comparing hardware, the BlackBerry can be limiting. With all hardware produced by RIM, all phones look and function pretty much the same with a QWERTY keypad that does make for easier typing if communication is a key asset. However, Android phones are produced by lots of different manufacturers that give users greater choice to find features they actually want and will use.

OS

Pretty much all BlackBerry devices are reliant on the keyboard, despite some touchscreen functionality, which does give BlackBerry extra points for easy communication. However, the full touchscreen Android phones do make for easy app and data management in one handset, using a single USB cable.

Upgrade

Upgrades and access to them is an important factor. And the good news is with BlackBerry they will always keep you up to speed on the latest versions, making upgrades much easier and quicker. Androids on the other hand can take longer, as the continuous release of newer phones and different manufacturers can put a delay on new Android versions being approved for use on certain models.

Networking

For networking, the BlackBerry is a winner. It uses BBM and BlackBerry email that makes communication simple and fast. However, Android also offer a number of similar apps with the same capabilities and some new ones that can make communication across multiple social media and IM apps seamless and straightforward.

Apps

Following on from networking you have to consider apps available on both devices. BlackBerry has it’s own app centre, which offers a great deal of apps for BlackBerry and there are now Android versions that are compatible from third party stores, but Android has the upper hand. They not only have more apps on offer, but also a vast selection of app stores to buy them from.

Battery Life

A vital consideration for any serious phone user has to be battery life. Androids are notorious for not holding battery charge for long, which can mean more frequent charging. On the other hand, BlackBerry are well-known for producing phones with long battery life, so if lasting battery power is priority, you might just be better sticking with a BlackBerry.

Hopefully, with all things considered, you’ll be pretty happy with your new Android device, especially once you’ve fully explored all that android devices have to offer and transferred all your important data from BlackBerry to Android using the tips above. We’d love to hear from you if you’ve made the switch, so get in touch and tell us what you love – and what you’re not so sure of – about your new device.
